I am a Professor of Phonetics in Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, where I co-direct the Phonetics Lab.
My research involves sociolinguistics, phonetics, laboratory phonology, speech articulation and multilingualism. I have focussed extensively on the Celtic languages, especially Scottish Gaelic, and multilingualism with English. My current research projects involve acquisition of articulation in Gaelic-English bilinguals and Estonian monolingual children. I am also investigating the historical and contemporary evolution of accent in the north of England using archival data, articulatory phonetics, and arts-based methods. I supervise projects on multilingualism in China, voice quality in English, variation and change in English, and the voice and ageing.
