Claire Nance

Professor of Phonetics

Lancaster University

I am a Professor of Phonetics in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, where I co-direct the Phonetics Lab.

My research involves sociolinguistics, phonetics, laboratory phonology, and bilingualism. In particular, I focus on the Celtic languages, especially Scottish Gaelic. I consider the phonetic and social implications of bilingualism and have extensively investigated the context of minority language revitalisation in Scotland. I also investigate language variation and change in the north of England across generations and between locations.
